the more he contemplates, the less he lives; the more readily he recognizes his own needs in the images of need proposed by the dominant system, the less he understands his own existence and his own desires.

This mind map was made for my MA graduation show. The aim was to create one unified piece of work but which communicated in a very similar way to the mind maps I was making within my bedroom and studio at the time.(see http://brightstembuildingblocks.tumblr.com/#7610061243)
On the day the show went up I arrived at the gallery very early with all the images I owned and scattered them out on hte floor. The only thing I really knew was which image I was starting with which was a 3d generated sculpture which resembled a fetus in the whom. From there I would work outwards developing relationships between the images. It was a bit of a gamble as I had never produced a mind map like this as a finished piece of work only as exploration towards something else. This was then presented with a paper exploring the main themes and a website which explored similar themes to the mindmap you can still see this here: http://www.acwood.co.uk/building%20blocks/index.html

Here’s a photo taken of my bedroom around 2007. You can see that I’m now using my wall as a place to stimulate my brain in many different areas. I don’t usually use my studio/bedroom walls as places to explore one single project but rather explore all the different areas of interest at once. often placing the images next to each other in ways that bare no logical or strait forward relationship.

This is one of the earliest mind maps i have recorded. It was put together in my first year at uni. When I went to uni (in Surrey I had grown up in Yorkshire) the whole experience was very disconnected from my life previously so this was a way of connecting the two creating one mental landscape out of two separate parts.

About

Building Blocks is best understood as a visual editing process or mind map which can aid in developing creative ideas/ways of thinking. This blog has been set up as a space to explore how these visual mind maps aid creative exploration.

This way of editing/organizing visual media touches on many broader issues such as how the two sides of the brain work (particularly in relation to people with dyslexia), how our society has been shaped by ideas surrounding structure and order which emerged of the enlightenment and how the global community interacts/digests media through digital technology.

As the project develops I will be presenting these issues along with mind maps I have done and the projects they have helped me go on to produce. But I am hoping to also get contributions from other people whether it be your own work, the work of other artists/scientists who work in this way or anything else which helps explore/expand the debate. Just use the submit button at the top of the page.

To gain a better understanding of Building Blocks please watch/listen to the talk I gave which is at the top of this page.

By shifting emphasis from the ‘end process’ to the ‘development process’. I hope Building Blocks will create debate and develop skills around the creative processes we employ to enable new ideas/thoughts perceptions to come into being.

I would implore everyone whether they are from an arts background or just have a curious mind to have a go at creating there own visual mindmap (even if your not confident enough to upload it).

If any one needs help making there own mind map please let me know and i will put a tutorial together. My suggestion to begin with for those of you who aren’t tech savi is to get a blank wall some white tak and just start arranging your images on the wall. This is how I started and is no doubt what many of you already do so just continue that process but with just more attention to the way in which you arrange the images.

Best,
Andrew
